Vivani Medical is betting that a miniature implant could be the next frontier in obesity treatment, developing a device loaded with semaglutide — the same active ingredient that powers Novo Nordisk's blockbuster weight-loss injection Wegovy and its diabetes counterpart Ozempic. The California-based company is positioning the implant as a long-term alternative to the weekly self-injections that have made GLP-1 drugs both celebrated and burdensome for millions of patients.
The central challenge GLP-1 therapies face is adherence: patients who stop taking the medications typically regain much of the weight they lost. A subcutaneous implant could address that problem by delivering a steady, controlled dose of semaglutide over an extended period, removing the requirement for patients to self-administer injections on a regular schedule.
